Advised My Daughter to Get an RN Career Degree

When my daughter asked me for career advice, I thought very hard before suggesting anything to her. Although I come from a family of lawyers and I am a lawyer myself, I did not impose for my children to follow in my footstep. They are free to choose any career they like. I have always believed that in order for people to succeed in anything they do, work, hobbies, or even sport, they need to enjoy what they do. That’s why I thought hard, and evaluated where my daughter’s good at, so that my proposal would be appropriate for her.

My daughter has always excelled in all of her subjects at school, but her awards came mostly from Science related subjects. This was the main reason why I thought of healthcare professions, and I remembered that when my daughter was little, she would often play a nurse to her dolls. Until about five or six, her dream was to become a nurse. I suddenly focused on a nursing career, especially when Julia volunteers at the Children’s Hospital near her school during weekdays.

Because I was convinced my daughter, Julia, would be an effective nurse, I started researching on the web the nursing profession. Of all the types of nurses available, being a registered nurse or RN was the one I think would be most appropriate for my daughter. I discovered that acquiring a BSN or Bachelor of Science in Nursing is the first step to becoming a registered nurse. An RN Career Degree usually requires a 4 years study, with coursework that comprises science classes such as biology, anatomy, psychology, and chemistry, as well as general education.

Once the 4 year course is finished, my daughter needs to do a clinical partnership for a few months, and take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) test, administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Once she passes the examination that will test the knowledge she gained through classroom study and practice, Julia can already practice being an RN for the particular state she’s licensed for. I discovered that in order for a nurse to practice her career in a different state, she needs to take the NCLEX-RN for the state she’ll be practicing her nursing profession for.

During my research, I also learned that there is a shortage of nurses in the country. The said shortage will continue for 5 or 10 more years, which is the reason why nurses are very in demand in the United States right now. There is a shortage because the number or patients does not meet the number of nurses required. That plus a few nursing students in the country, equals to continuous scarcity of nurses. Aside from being in demand, nurses are also one of the highly compensated careers in the country.

For those who aren’t available to attend ground school to get an RN Career Degree, I discovered that nursing courses are now available to be taken online. Aside from RN, there’s also LPN careers online schooling and CNA careers online education. LPN stands for licensed practice nurse, while CNA stands for certified nursing assistants. These types of nurses are also highly in demand. I shared what I found out to my daughter, and she lit up when I mentioned an RN Career.
